Furniture Style Files

Everyone has a unique taste and certain palate in furniture by which they decorate their homes. One will feel it hard to find one’s own taste if they don’t know what it’s called. The word furniture comes from the French word fourniture, which means equipment. Here we will tour through some of the most famous styles of furniture used in the world of interiors.

Traditional furniture is called formal furniture from the Victorian period. It combines features from the Queen Anne period – graceful and elaborately decorated, Chippendale style – artistic embellishment and straightened out lines and Sheraton style – delicate pieces with tapered legs and contrasting inlays. Together this creates a comfortable and warm environment with hand crafted, dark timber pieces, over stuffed, plush sofas and elegant fabrics.

The enduring popularity of the Mid-Century Modern style is based on many factors. It gave us clean lines, gentle organic curves, a love for different materials and designers that are idolized even today. While there is some disagreement about when the period started, it roughly lasted from the mid-1930s to mid-1960s

Moving away from the ornate carvings of the Baroque and Rococo periods that preceded it, Neo classical furniture or contemporary classic furniture offers a more streamlined style. While fluted details can still be found on things like chairs and sofas, design elements centre on simpler features such as tapered legs, scrolls and medallions.

Fabrics and upholstery are rich but subtle, with colors like moss green, dusty blue and pink, and crisp, classic white.

Transitional Style (also known as “updated classic for men”, “classic with a contemporary twist”, “new takes on old classics”) in interior design and furniture design refers to a contemporary blend of traditional and modern styles, midway between old world traditional and the world of chrome and glass contemporary; incorporating lines that are less ornate than traditional designs, but not as severely basic as contemporary lines. As a result, transitional furniture designs are classic, timeless, and clean.

Contemporary style is easily recognizable for its simple and sleek lines. It is very distinguishable from a more traditional style in that there is hardly any intricate detail or carving. The lines of contemporary style furniture are either hard edged or gently curved.

Eclectic style encompasses a variety of periods and styles and is brought together through the use of color, texture, shape and finish. Here’s how it breaks down: Colors: The palette can vary, but it’s best to stick with a few neutrals to help tie all the elements together.

The MD of Spacio Mr. Navin Kanodia says “Furniture has been a staple of wealth and luxury for centuries. Over the period the industry has been graced with all forms and shapes of furniture and Spacio creates such bespoke masterpieces as per client’s requirement taking into consideration the above genres.

7 Ways to Take Care of Your Furniture During Monsoon

It’s that time of the year when you feel the rain by being your cosy best. Curling up in the couch reading your best author’s book might be your intentions. A cup of hot chocolate or tea will add up to the mood of monsoon. In this brilliant weather we must not forget our furniture as they need a lot of care and pampering from us. Below is 7 ways how we can protect and keep our furniture safe for longevity.

Dry it out

In no way you are supposed to clean your furniture using wet clothes. Wet clothes are breeding ground for termites as due to heavy moisture in the air the furniture can soften and get damaged easily.

Moisturising

Just like we apply strong moisturizers during winter and sunscreen during scorching heat of the sun in the same way our furniture need oiling and waxing(bees wax) during monsoon in order to remain smooth or else it will result in expansion of furniture.

De-humidify your room

We all know what humidity does to us. It is equally damaging for your wooden furniture. Use a dehumidifier to get rid of the moisture in the room and say goodbye to moulds on wood.

DIY the saviour

There are lot of moisture absorbing agents available in the market, camphor and naphthalene balls are few of them which keeps our furniture intact. They also keep away termites from making home in our precious furniture. Even neem leaves and cloves acts as a good moisture absorbing agents.

A big no to renovation

Monsoon is the time for maintenance hence do not try to paint or polish wood at your home during monsoon as it may adversely affect your wood. Try to get this done before the onset of monsoon or wait for it to get over until you start this enhancement.

Do not keep your furniture in direct contact with the walls

Our walls tend to absorb moisture faster and get damped during monsoon. In return it passes on the moisture to our furniture if kept in direct contact with the wall. Hence it is always advisable to keep the furniture few inches away from the walls.

Change the placement of your furniture

The intelligent thing to do during monsoon is to keep your furniture away from doors and window where it can come in direct contact with the rain water in the form of drops or leakages. Garden chairs that are nylon webbed or painted metal should be kept indoors during the monsoons to prevent them from cracking or from chipping off paint.
